Shuttle launch status and crew

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP)
Conditions were expected to remain ideal Saturday for launching in Florida. But across the Atlantic, more rain and thick clouds were forecast.
...
In 21 years of space shuttle flight, NASA has had to postpone launches only a few times because of bad weather at the overseas landing sites.
...
Donald Pettit was assigned to the mission just four months ago. He was originally the backup for Donald Thomas. But on Friday, NASA said Thomas was removed from the flight because of concerns about the amount of radiation he would have received.

"It was an assessment of the radiation exposure he would have gotten on a long-duration mission," said NASA spokesman Doug Peterson. He said such assessments are based on the individual, his spaceflight experience and his personal background.

Cosmic radiation has always been a major medical concern facing astronauts who spend prolonged periods in space; it can raise the risk of cancer and other illnesses.

Canadian Climate

Considering moving somewhere in Canada? If you're wondering what the climate is like, this is the site where you'll find the raw numbers (the facts ma'am, just the facts). It not only shows the normal climate for a region, it also documents the extremes you may encounter.

Ethereal Network Analyzer

Ethereal is a pretty darn good packet capture/decoder, and most importantly it's free. You need the Windows distribution binaries and if you are planning to capture packets with a Windows machine, don't forget to install WinPcap.

I almost always find something of interest at research sites. Maybe you will too.

NASA clears shuttle for flight

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Nov. 20 (UPI)
NASA managers said Wednesday that they have cleared shuttle Endeavour for a second launch attempt on Friday, convinced that the spaceship's damaged robot arm will perform as needed during the upcoming space station construction mission.
...
The first launch attempt was called off three hours before liftoff when an oxygen leak was detected in the shuttle's crew cabin. During a hunt to find the source of the leak, the shuttle's arm was damaged.
